Battery energy storage system

Also: BESS, battery storage, standalone storage

A grid-connected battery site: containers of lithium-ion cells, inverters and a substation, built in months on a few acres.

A utility-scale battery site is rows of containerized battery modules on concrete pads, with inverters, transformers and a substation. It charges from the grid and discharges when power is worth more. Standalone storage has its own queue position; a battery paired with a solar farm usually shares the solar farm's.

Battery sites are smaller and faster to build than solar farms (a few acres to a dozen per hundred megawatts, and months rather than a year), with more concrete, electrical and fire protection work per acre. Groundtrace tracks standalone battery sites as their own industry.
